Burl Turnings

From Burls to Bowls!

burl on treeAfter retirement, I needed something to occupy my time.  Not one for sitting around, my brother suggested that I take up wood turning for a hobby.  Well, soon my hobby turned into more than just turning a few things on the lathe once in a while.

My interest in woodturning began around 1990. Watching various wood turners give demonstrations at wood shows gave me a desire to try my hand at "woodturning."

I bought a lathe, chisels, chucks, etc. and began turning. Wood that was destined for the fireplace or doomed to decay in a woodlot started turning into bowls. Parts of trees that once may have housed a special tree house or a swing turned into "gift bowls."

Burls (growths on the side of trees) have a special interest since there are no "growth rings" and each burl develops its own design.

Many hours are required to complete a bowl. Old dental tools come in handy to clean out cracks and bark intrusions.

Applying only a clear, non-toxic finish allows each piece of wood to display its own inner beauty. This is what makes each bowl unique and "ONE OF A KIND."
